EQ Hotel Kuala Lumpur Review: Studio Suite & Club Lounge
Our first Malaysian hotel: the EQ Kuala Lumpur Studio Suite booked directly. Honeymoon surprises, Bvlgari toiletries, and a 50th-floor private check-in.
Watch on YouTube→The EQ Hotel is a five-star property in the center of Kuala Lumpur, positioned near KLCC Park and the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center. This was our first Malaysian hotel stay and the property set an immediate bar.
We booked a Studio Suite with Club Access for two nights directly at 3,395 RM (approximately $768 USD). The EQ Hotel is part of The Hotel Collection by Amex, so if you hold an eligible Amex card, you can book through that program for additional benefits. Because Vincent had noted it was our honeymoon in the reservation, the hotel prepared a genuinely thoughtful welcome that we were not expecting.
Check-In
Club Level guests check in on the 50th floor at the Equator Club Lounge rather than the main lobby. Private check-in, quiet, and a completely different energy from walking into a busy hotel reception area.
When we got to the suite, the hotel had set up a large bouquet of fresh roses, a fruit and cake platter, and a towel art display with rose petals on the bed. No small gesture. This was the first of a few moments during the Malaysia trip where hotel staff turned a standard room into something that actually felt like a celebration.
The Studio Suite
Living space: A comfortable living room with a large, modern light fixture overhead, an American-sized sectional sofa, and a dining desk with international and USB-C outlets built into the surface. The desk is practical, not decorative.
Bedroom: The bed is very comfortable and the room has a close-up view of the KL Tower directly from the window. One feature worth noting: there are two separate AC units, one for the living area and one for the bedroom, with independent controls. Useful for two people with different temperature preferences.
Bathroom: Large, with his-and-hers sinks, a soaking tub, and a walk-in shower with a waterfall showerhead. The toiletries throughout, including the hand soap, are Bvlgari. A meaningful upgrade from the standard hotel amenity bottles.
Mini-bar: All non-alcoholic drinks and snacks are complimentary and restocked daily. This includes local Malaysian chocolates and teas, which were a nice touch given we were there specifically to experience local products.
One thing to know: Turndown service is not automatic here. If you want the evening service, you need to request it. Easy enough through the hotel, but do not assume it will happen without asking.
Equator Club Lounge (50th Floor)
Access to the lounge is the reason to book a Club Level room at this property, especially for a staycation or a slower-paced stay.
The space feels residential rather than institutional. All-day refreshments are available and the service is attentive without being intrusive.
Complimentary pressing: Lounge access includes two garments pressed per day. For a multi-night stay, this is a genuinely useful perk.
Food: Breakfast, afternoon tea, and an evening Sundowners service are all included. The staff keeps drinks topped up throughout each service period.
For the full comparison of every lounge service versus the main NEPA buffet downstairs, see the EQ Hotel KL Dining Guide. Short version: the lounge wins clearly on quality.
Pool, Gym, and Spa
Pool (29th floor): A heated infinity pool with a direct view of the KL Tower. There is also a jacuzzi and a pool bar. The combination of the heated water and the tower view makes this one of the better hotel pools we used on the trip.
Gym: TechnoGym equipment throughout, fully stocked with punching bags, Smith machines, and a solid free weights section. One of the more complete hotel gym setups we have seen. Also has a view of the pool.
Sauna and steam room: Connected to the locker rooms. Both were available during our stay but neither ran hot enough for our preference. Your expectations may vary, but if a proper sauna is important to you, manage expectations accordingly.
"Tropical Monsoon" shower: An interesting add-on in the locker rooms, worth trying once.
Sky51 and Dining
Sky51 (51st floor): The rooftop bar with a panoramic view of the Petronas Twin Towers. The hotel concierge made a reservation for us proactively before we even asked, which was a nice touch. Get there early and confirm your table has the right angle on the towers. See the EQ Hotel KL Dining Guide for the Sky51 tip on minimum spend for non-guests.
NEPA Restaurant (ground floor): The main buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Massive variety but average quality. Skip it in favor of the lounge if you have access.
Final Verdict
The EQ Hotel delivered on every level that matters for a luxury stay: attentive service, a beautiful room with real features rather than just aesthetic choices, and a lounge that is genuinely worth the upgrade.
The one honest note: if your itinerary is packed and you are out exploring KL from morning to evening, you will miss most of the lounge service hours and the value proposition shifts. Book the Club Level if you plan to actually use the property. If you are in the city purely to move around and explore, a standard room gets you the location without paying for access you will not use.
For a honeymoon stay or a proper relaxation trip, this is an excellent choice.
