Stockyards Steakhouse Phoenix Review: Arizona's Oldest Steakhouse Since 1947
Stockyards Steakhouse: Arizona's oldest since 1947, local K4 Ribeye from Prescott, American Wagyu that melts, and life-changing sautéed mushrooms.
Watch on YouTube→Stockyards Steakhouse has been operating in Phoenix since 1947, making it the oldest steakhouse in Arizona. It is 5 to 10 minutes from the airport, and surprisingly few people seem to know it exists. We saw the reviews and had to find out if it lived up to them.
First Impressions
Walking in feels like stepping into classic old-school Arizona. They have a vintage 1889 menu on display: a Porterhouse for two was $15, soup was 50 cents.
Bread service: Biscuits and cornbread. The cornbread has a subtle jalapeño kick and a good crunch. The standout was the butter, which has a unique, slightly fruity flavor neither of us had encountered anywhere else.
Appetizers
Each steak entree comes with a choice of soup or salad.
New England Clam Chowder: Rich and comforting without an overly fishy taste, topped with crispy fried potatoes. This was excellent.
Wedge Salad: Possibly better than the one at Capital Grille. Super crunchy, with a ranch dressing that is subtle and refreshing rather than heavy with blue cheese.
The Steaks
The presentation was more modern and refined than the older online photos suggested.
K4 Ribeye, 14oz (Vincent's order): A local prime-cut steak from Prescott, Arizona. Perfectly seasoned, juicy, with a great char crust on the outside.
American Wagyu, 8oz (my order): It was my birthday month, so I went for this. Unbelievably tender. It melted.
Order the mushrooms: We added a side of sautéed mushrooms and they were genuinely one of the best steakhouse sides we have had anywhere. So juicy, packed with flavor. Do not skip this.
Birthday Surprise
The staff brought out a complimentary Shortbread Pudding for my birthday: a brownie-shortbread hybrid with a hint of cinnamon, served with ice cream. The right amount of indulgent to close the meal.
Verdict
Our total came to $167. We have been to STK, Capital Grille, Fleming's, and J&G Steakhouse. Stockyards holds its own against all of them. The service was warm, the portions were generous, and the steak was among the best we have had.
If you are in Phoenix or flying through Sky Harbor, this is the place.
