Travel Booking Website & Money Saving Tips

Transportation & Things to Do Booking Website: I recommend using Klook to purchase the JR Pass, Suica, and rental car. Klook is the only third-party website where I could purchase the JR Pass. Additionally, there are occasional promotions to help you save money. Furthermore, there are usually 5% Rakuten cashback deals available as well!

*Recap: I recommend to book JR Pass, Suica, Rental Car, Universal Studios or other attraction tickets! If you need to understand why you need JR Pass, I have more details below.

Klook.com

Hotel Booking Website: I recommend using Trip Advisor because, after comparing all websites such as Klook, Expedia, and Booking.com, I found that Trip Advisor offered the best prices hotels in Asia and allows me to accumulate points. Additionally, they occasionally offer limited-time deals, so you might get lucky. Moreover, there is usually a 4% Rakuten cashback!

Use the Rakuten Extension: Rakuten is a plugin you can download for your web browser, enabling you to earn cashback. If you don’t have it, feel free to use my Rakuten referral link. I’ve earned over $100 in cashback. In addition, if you collect AMEX points, you can also earn them through Rakuten if they provide offers.

Transportation Overview

JR PASS

What is JR Pass ? The JR Pass allows unlimited travel on most JR trains, including Shinkansen (bullet trains), limited express trains, and local trains, as well as some buses and ferries, making it an excellent option for exploring Japan’s extensive railway network.

How To Purchase & Exchange JR Pass? This is how we purchased and pick up our JR Pass.

  1. Purchase JR Pass from Klook
    • We purchased a 14-day JR Pass with the free mailing option through Klook
  2. In a few days, you will receive a Paper Exchange Order for each traveler
  3. Once you arrive in Japan, visit the Official Exchange Counter
    • We exchanged ours at Tokyo Station. Other locations, you can check out from here

Do you need a JR Pass ?  If you are staying longer than 7 days and expecting traveling from cities to cities, highly recommend it to save money. If you are only traveling one or two cities and not planning to take bullet train often then it may not be worth it.

Suica Card

What is Suica Card ? Use for Train, Bus, Subway travel and other payment such as shopping, coin lockers, parking, and so on. Overall, the Suica card offers convenience and versatility for travelers and residents alike, serving as a convenient payment method for transportation and various other everyday transactions.

How To Purchase Suica Card?

Option 1:

  1. Purchase Suica from Klook
  2. Once you are at Haneda Airport, you can pick up.

Option 2:

  1. Navigate to Apple Wallet
  2. Search for Suica
  3. Add it to your wallet and load balance.
  4. We used this method because we utilized the AMEX Green Card to earn 3X points for transportation. If you are an AMEX points collector, I highly recommend it.
    • The AMEX Green Card link includes a referral link. If you end up signing up with our referral link, we would greatly appreciate it! 🙏

Do you need a Suica Card? I highly recommend getting one! Suica is like your Apple Pay or Android Pay in Japan. I used it for public transportation and even for playing games. It’s incredibly convenient, and you can easily load money onto it using your credit cards.

🔗 Learn More and Purchase Suica Card from here

Rental Car

Do you need to rent a car? If you are traveling to big cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka, then you don’t need a car. However, if you are planning a trip to Mt. Fuji or Nagano, I recommend renting one to save time and be more flexible.

Why did we book a rental car? We visited Nagano and Mt. Fuji. Since public transportation options are limited in these areas, we decided to rent a car for 3 days.

💁‍♀️ Rental Car Tips

  1. Book your rental car in advance
    • Klook is serviced by top rated suppliers such as Hertz, AVIS, Alamo, SIXT, Enterprise, Budget, Dollar, Europcar. To learn more, check out the Klook Rental Car
  2. Get your International Driving Permit from AAA
  3. Prepare cash and load money onto your Suica card to pay your toll fees.
    • Some tolls accept Suica, while others do not. Make sure to have cash with you.
  4. Before driving, be sure to take pictures and videos to check for any damages.

Luggage Transportation Overview 🧳

How many luggages did we travel for 18 days? For the 18-day trip, we traveled with a total of four pieces of luggage. This included two carry-ons and two large suitcases. We needed to pack extra jackets due to our visit to Hokkaido, hence the additional luggage.

For the 18 days of our trip, did we carry our luggage everywhere? 🙅‍♀️No, we didn’t. Instead, we opted to use Yamato Transport to ship our two large suitcases to our upcoming hotels. This way, we only had to carry our two carry-on luggage pieces and two backpacks with us.

So, how did we plan our luggage shipping?

YamatoHotel received our luggage and delivered to our room. On Day 5, when we checkout, we ship to “Roku Kyoto | Hilton LXR”OsakaKyoto

What’s Yamato Transport?

Yamato Transport, also known as “Kuroneko Yamato” in Japan, is a renowned logistics company offering reliable shipping and delivery services. Specializing in parcel delivery and courier services, Yamato Transport is trusted by both individuals and businesses for its efficiency and convenience. With a wide network of distribution centers and delivery drivers across Japan, they provide timely and secure transportation of packages, including luggage forwarding for travelers. Their convenient shipping options and commitment to customer satisfaction make Yamato Transport a popular choice for hassle-free delivery solutions.

Why used Yamato Transport?

Yamato Transport Counters are found all over Japan, making them super convenient to use. They’re a bit pricier, but it’s worth it to avoid dragging big bags through Japan’s crowded spots. They’re a lifesaver when you want to travel light and hassle-free.

What’s Airport Luggage Store?

Many airports offer paid baggage storage services, which can be incredibly convenient if you need to temporarily store your luggage near the airport. It’s often the best option for travelers who have a layover or need to explore the area without being encumbered by their bags.

Why Airport Luggage Store?

Since we needed to fly from Tokyo to Hokkaido and back again, we found it unnecessary to carry all four of our luggages throughout the trip. Bringing the additional two big luggages on a domestic flight would have been more expensive. So, for our convenience and to save costs, we decided to utilize the airport luggage storage service in Tokyo. It proved to be an affordable and hassle-free solution for us.

Here is the information for the Haneda Baggage Store at Terminal 3. We chose this location because it operates 24 hours a day, ensuring that no matter what time we returned, we could easily retrieve our belongings. I highly recommend this option for its convenience and accessibility.

Here are three key tips for hassle-free luggage management during your travels:

  1. Ship to 4 or 5 Star Hotels: Consider shipping your luggage directly to 4 or 5-star hotels where you plan to stay. These hotels typically have ample storage space and offer excellent customer service. Additionally, they often provide the convenience of delivering your luggage directly to your room upon arrival.
  2. Use Air Tags or Tracking Devices: Attach an air tag or tracking device to your luggage to keep tabs on its whereabouts. This provides peace of mind and allows you to track your luggage’s location in real-time. In case of any mishaps or delays, having a tracking device can help you quickly identify and resolve the issue.
  3. Secure Luggage Tags: Always ensure your luggage has a sturdy luggage tag with your contact information. In the unfortunate event that your luggage gets lost or misplaced, having a clear and visible luggage tag makes it easier for others to contact you and facilitate its return.

Daily Itinerary Overview

Day 1: Arrived In Tokyo!

You’ve just arrived, likely feeling a mix of exhaustion and excitement. Why not dive into some incredible Japanese cuisine and explore the vibrant cities? Since we arrived late, we didn’t do much this night and didn’t have the chance to visit our list of restaurants. Instead, we opted for a quick stop at a Japanese convenience store. But I would love to share my list of restaurants below.

😋 Here are my top recommendations for food spots:

🍣Sushi: Kaitenzushi Nemuro Hanamaru KITTE Marunouchi

🍜Ramen: Mutekiya

🏨Hotel We Stayed at: Center Hotel Tokyo

Personally, I opted to stay at Center Hotel Tokyo upon our late arrival, as we were heading to Osaka the next morning. It’s a budget-friendly option that allowed us to quickly rest before embarking on our Japan travel journey!

👍Likes: Most hotels in Tokyo near train stations can be pricey, but Center Hotel Tokyo offers affordability and is within walking distance from the station.

👎Dislikes: The rooms are quite small, but this is typical for Japanese hotels, especially in Tokyo.

🤷‍♀️Communication: Overall, check-in process was smooth since we just need to provide our passport. However, if you need to ask more questions, recommend you to prepare translation app.

⭐If you’re interested, here are a few other hotel recommendations near the Tokyo Station, I was planning to book:

Day 2: Tokyo To Osaka

We were thrilled to head to Osaka after hearing all about its fantastic food scene and, of course, the excitement of Universal Studios. After some research, we figured 2-3 days would be just right for our stay. Plus, with Universal Studios on the itinerary, we opted for a 3-night stay!

Here’s a glimpse into our Day 2 adventures in Osaka:

  • We kicked off the day with a visit to a local Japanese café to experience how the locals start their mornings. It’s a whole different vibe, and you’ve got to experience it to truly appreciate it!
  • Our first task was picking up our JR Pass from Tokyo Station and grabbing some random snacks from the station for our bullet train journey.
  • The highlight of the day was riding the JR Bullet Train from Tokyo to Shin Osaka! It’s always such a thrill!
  • After checking into our hotel, we wasted no time and headed straight to Dotonburi to soak in the vibrant atmosphere and indulge in some street food delights.
  • And, of course, no trip to Japan would be complete without indulging in an onsen experience. We chose Osaka Hinode Hotel Nipponbashi based on its stellar reviews and onsen offerings.

😋Here are my top recommendations for food spots:

🍳Okonomiyaki: Chibo Okonomiyaki Restaurant

🍜Ramen: Ichiran Ramen Dotonbori – South Building

🍓Dessert: STRAWBERRY

🏨Hotel We Stayed at: Osaka Hinode Hotel Nipponbashi

The first thing on our Japan bucket list was enjoying a traditional Japanese onsen. After a long flight, what better way to relax and unwind? Osaka Hinode Hotel caught our attention with its glowing reviews, and it didn’t disappoint.

👍Likes: The hotel room was clean and cozy, and we absolutely adored the charming rooftop area. The option of both public and private Onsen was a definite plus. We opted for the private Onsen and it was pure bliss! And let’s not forget about the happy hour—complimentary food and drinks? Yes, please!

👎Dislikes: The only downside was the bustling atmosphere, especially in the lounge area. We ended up skipping breakfast one morning due to the long queues, despite our best efforts to wake up early.

🤷‍♀️Communication: Thankfully, the hotel staff spoke English fluently, which made communication a breeze.

Overall, our stay at Osaka Hinode Hotel Nipponbashi was fantastic, and we can’t wait to explore more of what Osaka has to offer!

Day 3: Osaka Universal Studio

Living in America, I initially questioned the need to visit Universal Studios in Japan. But upon digging deeper, I discovered that the Japanese version offers unique rides not found in California. So, we decided to snag tickets for Universal Studios, though we missed out on the coveted Nintendo World tickets despite booking in advance.

Here’s how Day 3 unfolded:

  • We checked into our next hotel bright and early.
  • Hopping on a JR train, we made our way to Universal Studios.
  • We spent a thrilling half-day enjoying the food and rides before calling it quits around 3 pm.
  • Our taste buds led us to Kame Sushi Sohoten for a delightful taste of Osaka sushi.
  • We meandered through Osaka, exploring its nooks and crannies.

😋Here are my top recommendations for food spots:

🍣Sushi: Kame Sushi Sohoten

🎢Universal Studio Food: All foods were amazing and you can get a cute Hello Kitty Bao!

🏨Hotel We Stayed at: HOTEL UNIZO Osaka Shinsaibashi

Since we planned to spend most of our time at Universal Studios, we opted for a more budget-friendly accommodation.

👍Likes: Despite its size, the hotel was fairly clean.

👎Dislikes: There’s not much to gripe about, but it’s worth noting that if you’re planning on doing laundry, you might run into some difficulties. With only two laundry machines available, and the washed clothes not smelling fresh afterward, it might be better to opt for a coin laundry instead.

🤷‍♀️Communication: Communication with the hotel staff was seamless, which made our stay even more enjoyable.

Our time in Osaka has been nothing short of amazing. We can’t wait to see what else this vibrant city has in store for us!

⭐ If you’re interested, here are a few other hotel recommendations in Osaka

Day 4: Osaka – Romantic & Relax

After four days of hotel hopping and exploring Universal Studios, we were in dire need of some rest and relaxation. So, we planned to treat ourselves to a luxurious stay at a top-notch hotel, where we could indulge in massages and spend some quality romantic time together. And boy, did we pick the perfect day for it—it was raining outside, which suited us just fine since I’m not a fan of rain.

Here’s a glimpse into our blissful Day 4:

  • We checked into the Conrad Osaka | Hilton FHR, a luxurious 5-star retreat.
  • One of the highlights of our day was visiting Ringram to create rings for each other—a beautiful gesture to commemorate our journey together.
  • Of course, no trip to Osaka would be complete without sampling some local delicacies. We tried out a highly recommended Okonomiyaki spot and it did not disappoint.
  • Back at the hotel, we indulged in the Executive Lounge Experience, treating ourselves to afternoon tea and evening cocktails.
  • And then came the ultimate relaxation—luxuriating in a massage that was nothing short of heavenly. The service and attention to detail were on a whole other level, truly reflecting the culture of hospitality in Japan.
  • We also took some time to explore the shopping areas near the hotel, adding a dash of retail therapy to our rejuvenating day.

😋Here are my top recommendations for food spots:

🍳Okonomiyaki: Negiyaki Yamamoto Umeda

🍰Dessert: Pâtisserie Ravi,e relier

🏨Hotel We Stayed at: Conrad Osaka | Hilton FHR 5 Star Luxury Hotel

Our decision to stay at the Conrad Osaka was reinforced by glowing reviews, even from a Japanese taxi driver! Plus, with our AMEX Platinum card, we could take advantage of the $200 resort credit provided bi-annually—a win-win situation. Want to learn more about how we saved over $325 for a night? We have full credit card strategy post here: Conrad Osaka | Hilton Hotel Fine Hotel & Resort Blog Post

👍Likes: Everything about our stay was impeccable. We especially enjoyed the Executive Lounge and the exceptional service. And let me tell you, that massage was an experience like no other. Highly recommended!

Overall, our day of luxury and relaxation at the Conrad Osaka was the perfect recharge we needed. It’s moments like these that make traveling so special!

Day 5 & 6: Kyoto

Our two-day stint in Kyoto left me longing for more time in this historically rich city. There’s just so much to see and explore! Despite the brief stay, we managed to squeeze in some unforgettable experiences:

  • Venturing to Nara Park for a delightful encounter with the Japanese deer inhabitants. 🦌

  • Enjoying a rickshaw ride through the enchanting Bamboo Forest. 🎍

😋Here are my top recommendations for food spots:

🍡Dessert: Nakatanidou (Most famous mochi place in Kyoto)

🍛Katsugyu: Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu

🍮Dessert: Fukushichi Pudding

🏨Hotel We Stayed at: Karasuma Kyoto Hotel

Given the steep prices of many Kyoto hotels, Karasuma Kyoto Hotel proved to be a budget-friendly gem. Since we didn’t plan on spending much time indoors, its affordability and central location were perfect for our needs.

👍Likes: The hotel’s prime location and spacious accommodations were definite highlights for us.

👎Dislikes: While the hotel is a bit on the older side, and you do have to carry a physical room key everywhere, these were minor inconveniences in the grand scheme of things.

🤷‍♀️Communication: Communication was a breeze, as everyone we encountered spoke fluent English.

Despite the short stay and a few quirks with the hotel, our time in Kyoto was nothing short of magical. I can’t wait to return and delve even deeper into this captivating city’s history and culture!

⭐ If you’re interested, here are a few other hotel recommendations in Osaka

Day 7: Luxury Stay at Roku Kyoto

That’s when we decided to treat ourselves to a stay at ROKU Kyoto—a strategic choice to unwind and rejuvenate our tired bodies. • Embarking on a culinary journey like no other at Tenjin Chef’s Table.

🏨Hotel We Stayed at: ROKU Kyoto | Hilton LXR Hotels & Resorts

As the only LXR Hotels & Resorts property in Japan, ROKU Kyoto embodies the epitome of luxury and sophistication. Each property within the LXR portfolio is carefully selected for its unique design and sense of place. Drawn in by the captivating videos showcasing the hotel’s stunning architecture and lush greenery, we knew we had to experience it for ourselves—especially since we could utilize our AMEX credit card benefits to stay for free instead of shelling out over $1000.

👍Likes: I was enamored by the overall atmosphere and architectural marvels of the hotel. It truly stands out as one of the most unique properties I’ve had the pleasure of visiting in Japan. The service was impeccable, and our dinner experience at the Chef’s Table was nothing short of extraordinary. While we expected nothing but excellence given the high price tag, it was the perfect way to celebrate my fiancé’s birthday and treat him to something truly special.

👎Dislikes: The only downside was the breakfast, which didn’t quite meet our expectations.

🤷‍♀️Communication: Communication with the staff was a breeze, as everyone we encountered spoke fluent English, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience throughout our stay.

Overall, our time at ROKU Kyoto was nothing short of magical—a luxurious retreat that left us feeling pampered and rejuvenated, ready to take on the rest of our Kyoto adventures with renewed energy and vigor.

👎 Dislikes: The only downside was that we were unable to try the Racing Simulator as it required advance reservation, and unfortunately, we were not informed about this beforehand.

Day 9: Spirited Away Theme | Historical Oldest Ryokan in Nagano ♨️

    https://youtu.be/VHAuCikmU9Y

Have you ever watched Spirited Away? During our recent trip, we had the incredible opportunity to stay at Rekishi-no-Yado Kanaguya Ryokan, the very inn that inspired the artists behind Spirited Away. Drawn by its rich history and traditional Japanese architecture dating back to 1758, we were captivated by the charm of this historic ryokan. Despite the availability of many modern ryokans in the area, we knew this was the perfect choice for us.

Our stay at Rekishi-no-Yado Kanaguya was not only steeped in history but also strategically located for our plans to visit the Snow Monkeys the next day. Situated closer to the Snow Monkey Park, it offered convenience and comfort in one package.

💁‍♀️ Tips: We booked this ryokan because it is closer to the Snow Monkey Park that we visited on Day 10. We wanted to visit it as early as possible before it gets crowded.

Here’s a glimpse of our unforgettable experience:

      • Admiring the intricate beauty of Japanese architecture as we explored every nook and cranny of the ryokan.

      • Indulging in the ultimate relaxation with a variety of themed Onsen right at the ryokan, each offering a unique and rejuvenating experience.

      • Venturing out to explore the village and sampling the public Onsen, immersing ourselves in the local culture.

      • Delighting in a sumptuous ryokan dinner featuring a wide array of delectable food options, atrue feast for the senses.

🏨Hotel We Stayed at: Rekishi-no-Yado Kanaguya

👍 Likes: The hospitality of the staff exceeded our expectations, and the food was simply divine. We were particularly enamored with the overall atmosphere of the ryokan and the exclusive onsen experience it offered.

👎 Dislikes: There’s very little to fault about our stay, though it’s worth noting that parking can be limited. The hotel staff assist with parking, but be prepared for a bit of a walk if you need to access your car during your stay.

🤷‍♀️ Communication: While the staff may not speak fluent English, they are incredibly accommodating. It’s helpful to have Google Translate handy for smoother communication.

Our time at Rekishi-no-Yado Kanaguya Ryokan was truly enchanting, and we left with cherished memories that will last a lifetime. If you’re seeking an authentic Japanese experience infused with history and charm, this ryokan is a must-visit destination.

⭐ Check out other ryokans in Ryokan Village we were planning to book. ♨️

Day 10: Snow Monkeys & Mount Fuji

    https://youtu.be/af0jCOfRE38

Have you ever seen or heard about Japanese Snow Monkeys soaking in Onsen? I always thought it was just a manga thing, but believe it or not, Snow Monkeys actually exist! And not only that, they’re incredibly polite. I couldn’t help but remark, “Even Japanese Monkeys are polite!”

Here’s a glimpse into the highlights of our tenth day:

      • Exploring the enchanting Snow Monkey Park , where we trekked up a mountain alongside these fascinating creatures.

    🥘Japanese Hamburger: Jouya

    🍜Noodle: Marugame Seimen Sinsyunakano

    🍮Dessert: cafe RUSTIC

🏨Hotel We Stayed at: Fuji Marriott Hotel Lake Yamanaka

We opted for this hotel due to its affordability and spacious accommodations, as we had three people sharing one room. With my mom joining us from Korea on Day 9, we needed a larger room, and this was the most cost-effective option available.

👍 Likes: The hotel boasts a fantastic Onsen that provided the perfect relaxation after a long day of sightseeing. What’s more, it’s pet-friendly! We stayed in a tatami room designated for pet owners, complete with amenities like a dog cage, snacks, and water.

👎 Dislikes: Unfortunately, our visit coincided with a large tour bus group, making the hotel exceptionally busy and somewhat chaotic. It was not the serene experience we had hoped for, though I’m not sure if this is a common occurrence.

🤷‍♀️ Communication: Thankfully, communication was a breeze as everyone we encountered spoke fluent English, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience despite the crowded conditions.

Overall, despite a few hiccups, our day exploring the Snow Monkey Park and enjoying the amenities of Fuji Marriott Hotel Lake Yamanaka was an unforgettable experience, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Day 11 was primarily a day of road travel for us, as we had to cover a considerable distance from Mount Fuji to Mishima Station before hopping on the bullet train. However, upon arriving in Tokyo, we were greeted by the vibrant nightlife the city is renowned for. After checking into our hotel, we set out to explore our surroundings and were delighted to discover that we were staying in the heart of Korean Town. Day 18: Flying Day | Haneda Airport

As our Japan journey came to an end, our final day was filled with mixed emotions as we bid farewell to this beautiful country. Returning to Tokyo from Hokkaido, we embarked on a last-minute shopping adventure at the international terminal before our flight home. However, my plan to shop for Japanese snacks inside the terminal turned out to be a bit of a misstep.

    Highlights of our last day:

Shopping at the airport souvenir shop: Unfortunately, the experience at the sole Japanese souvenir shop inside the international terminal fell short of expectations. The shop was crowded, with long lines and limited space, making it difficult to shop comfortably. In hindsight, I would recommend purchasing snacks outside the airport to save time and avoid the rush.

Visiting Delta Sky Lounge at Haneda Airport: Despite the shopping setback, our visit to the Delta Sky Lounge was a highlight of our day. The lounge provided a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the airport, with excellent service and delicious food offerings.

Flying Delta ONE: We made sure to maximize our sky mileage for our international trip. The service was impeccable, and the food exceeded our expectations!

In conclusion, while our final day in Japan had its challenges, it also offered moments of relaxation and indulgence. As we prepared to depart, we reflected on the unforgettable experiences and cherished memories from our time in this remarkable country. Until next time, Japan!
